The Billy Burchard Foundation’s primary fundraising event, the ‘Hit It & Hope’ Golf Tournament and Auction, is named for one of Billy’s essential golf strategies.
Billy began caddying at nine years old. He carried ‘doubles’ for regular groups on weekends, and on ‘caddy Mondays,’ Billy said that his friends and he would “sometimes play 50 holes in a day, or at least until we ran out of golf balls. I started to play pretty well and won my share of junior and caddy tournaments. I shot in the seventies a few times as a thirteen year old, and just loved life around the golf course.” He continued his love of golf, the course, and especially the brotherhood of players.
The inaugural Hit It & Hope Golf Tournament was a spirited gathering of Billy’s family and friends, and was played on the Ocean Course, at The Club at New Seabury, overlooking Nantucket Sound. While downpours and fog swept through most of the Cape during the day, the sun was shining on the course, while an aerial banner flew overhead with one of Bill’s favorite sayings, “Don’t let the facts get in the way of a good story,” which was affectionately known as ‘the Birdie Factor’.
This “Billy Day” was a first-class tribute to an amazing man, while in keeping with Billy’s passion for a jam-packed day of fun and laughter. Food was abundant, and beverages flowed throughout the day. Contests were competitive and sometimes laced with Billy’s humor- The ‘Longest Drive’ winner was awarded a Mercedes, a ‘mileage-challenged longest drive’ Mercedes, with 400K miles on the odometer… it was won by young man with a week-old license. A putting green contest with a chance to win $50K, a boat as the prize for the ‘Hole in One’ contest, and a ‘Closest to the Pin’ 50/50 raffle were a few of the many contests. The festivities continued with a lively auction, items including a variety of treasures- an autographed Tom Brady jersey, a round of golf at Winged Foot, four front row tickets to a Red Sox game, and a private round-trip jet ride to Nantucket for a two-night stay including a few rounds of golf at The Nantucket Golf Club. Awards were presented to the top three foursomes, a ‘Birdie prize’ for the group with the most birdies, and even a ‘booby prize’, which was an incredible hour-long lesson with the head golf professional.
Please help to give hope to those dealing with the emotional and physical stress of living with cancer, by joining us for a lively, memorable celebration honoring Billy’s life.

“Sue and her committee first came to us in May last year when their foundation was not even a month old. They were looking for a venue to hold their first annual "Hit it & Hope" benefit golf tournament they were planning for July. On extremely short notice, they put on one of the most successful events of our year. All of us at New Seabury were truly impressed with how their tournament uniquely combined a serious fund raising purpose with an all out determination to have a great deal of fun. Also, it was impossible for us not to be moved by the camaraderie that we saw, and the sense of positive emotion that resulted from good friends gathering to remember an inspirational person in their lives. We look forward to a long association with The Billy Burchard Foundation.”
