2007 Hit It & Hope

Golf Tournament & Auction

 

The inaugural Hit It & Hope Golf Tournament and Auction to benefit The Billy Burchard Foundation was held July 30, 2007 on the Ocean Course at New Seabury on Cape Cod. It was a great success thanks to the efforts of Billy's family, his legion of friends and to the generosity of our sponsors.

The Ocean Course at New Seabury overlooks Nantucket Sound. While downpours and fog swept through most of the Cape during the day, the sun was shining on us, as an aerial banner flew overhead with one of Bill’s favorite sayings, “Don’t let the facts get in the way of a good story.” This was affectionately known as ‘the Birdie Factor’.

This “Billy Day” was a first-class tribute to an amazing man, while in keeping with Billy’s passion for a jam-packed day of fun and laughter. Food was abundant, and beverages flowed throughout the day all across the course. We had a number of fun, but competitive , contests, some laced with Billy’s humor.

In a tribute to Billy's Hole in One story, the ‘Longest Drive’ winner was awarded a Mercedes, but it was severely ‘mileage-challenged,' with 400K miles on the odometer. The lucky winner was Jack Crowley, Gene's son, who got his driver's license just the week before. A putting green contest with a chance to win $50K, a boat as the prize for the ‘Hole in One’ contest, and a ‘Closest to the Pin’ 50/50 raffle were a few of the many contests.

After play, the festivities continued with a lively auction with the wise-cracking Dan Flynn presiding. Items included an autographed Tom Brady jersey, a round of golf at Winged Foot, four front row tickets to a Red Sox game, and a private round-trip jet ride to Nantucket for a two-night stay including a few rounds of golf at The Nantucket Golf Club. Awards were presented to the top three foursomes, a ‘Birdie prize’ for the group with the most birdies, and even a ‘booby prize’, which was an incredible hour-long lesson with the head golf professional.
