The Billy Burchard Foundation is pleased to announce that the funds raised from the July 2007 Hit It & Hope Golf Tournament and Auction were granted to two independent, but collaborating cancer research laboratories at Massachusetts General Hospital, and to The American Cancer Society for it’s campaign to open the AstraZeneca Hope Lodge® Center in Boston.
One of the research laboratories at MGH is co-directed by Dr. Carlos Fernandez Del Castillo, MD who performed the Whipple Resection surgery on Billy in July 2000, and Dr. Sarah Thayer, MD, PhD. Directing the other laboratory is Dr. Nabeel Bardeesey, PhD who works closely with Dr. David Ryan, MD, Billy’s former oncologist, and Dr. Aram Hezel, MD. The doctors of both research laboratories are working on studies targeting pancreatic cancer. The doctors are using these funds as seed money for new studies. Dr. Fernandez and Dr. Ryan were supportive of Billy’s determined will to fight his cancer, and continued to give Billy hope, with their continual search for alternative and experimental therapies.
The New England Division of the American Cancer Society is currently constructing the AstraZeneca Hope Lodge Center® in Boston, which will provide 40 suites of free, temporary lodging and support for cancer patients undergoing outpatient treatment in any Boston hospital.
